TATTOO AFTERCARE:

Peacock’s Tattoo Studio knows a tattoo is one of the most dynamic symbols of self-expression ever created, and it’s essential to rely on the expert guidance of your artists for proper aftercare. If you follow the directions below, your tattoo should heal quickly and correctly.

WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER YOUR TATTOO:

A tattoo causes trauma to your body. Depending on the tattoo’s placement, size, individual hygiene, and daily activities, healing differs for everyone. Because a tattoo is an open wound, they are susceptible to infections. Following the aftercare instructions listed below is best to lower your risk of problems during the healing process.

You should expect your new tattoo to be red, irritated, swollen, and possibly bruised. These are normal reactions to the tattoo area. Usually, you can anticipate 1 to 3 days for red or irritated skin to subside. If swelling or bruising occurs, it could last for up to a week, especially if tattooed in a sensitive area such as the feet.

Scabbing is a result of the body’s healing process. Let the scab fall off naturally. During the final stages of the healing process, typically in 3 to 10 days, you can expect the skin to flake and peel. Do not pick or scratch at the area. It could remove ink from the tattoo and damage it. You will also want to ensure that you keep the area clean and moisturized, but do not over-moisturize; follow the instructions below.

At Peacock’s Tattoo, we stand by our work. If a touch-up on your tattoo is needed, our artists will complete it at no additional charge as long as you return within the first 90 days. If you are not in the area during this time frame, please get in touch with us to explain your circumstance, and we would be happy to extend that period.

REMOVAL OF BANDAGE/CARING FOR YOUR NEW TATTOO:

You can take your bandage off in 4-6 hours. However, leaving it on for 24 hours is recommended. When you take the bandage off, wash the tattoo with cool water and antibacterial soap until thoroughly cleaned. (Use your hands to wash the tattoo, a rag is too abrasive.) Pat dry (avoid rubbing) with a clean towel. Air dry for 10-15 minutes. Apply a very thin coat of Aquaphor on the tattoo. Do not re-bandage the tattoo. Repeat 2-3 times daily for 3-5 days, then switch to a mild, fragrance-free lotion. Continue using lotion until completely healed, about 7-10 days. It’s alright to get the tattoo wet in the shower. However, submerging your tattoo in water (baths, hot tubs, ocean, pool, etc.) is NOT RECOMMENDED until it is completely healed. Avoid picking at your tattoo; allow it to peel and heal naturally. Wear loose clothing, if necessary, to cover your tattoo during your healing process. Please call (904-642-0037) or come by the shop if you have questions or concerns about your tattoo.

PIERCING AFTERCARE:

Everyone’s body reacts differently to the various types of piercings. A good piercing can still cause problems if not cared for properly. The healing process of the piercing always goes better when the client follows our aftercare guidelines listed below.

CARING FOR YOUR NEW PIERCING

New piercings must have proper aftercare during the healing process. Not doing so can delay the healing time by months or sometimes years, do not take it lightly. Below we have outlined the general things you should do as well as things you should not be when caring for your piercing.

Please keep it clean: Never touch your piercing with unwashed hands-This can cause irritation or infection.

Reduce pain and swelling: Ice combined with Ibuprofen will help alleviate pain and swelling. (use Ibuprofen as directed on the bottle)

Before caring for your piercing: Always wash your hands before handling or cleaning your new piercing!

Use a sterile saline spray (H2Ocean) 3-4 times daily to spray the area. Use sterile gauze to wipe away any debris from the piercing.

An antimicrobial soap like Provon should be used no more than twice a day. Use a small amount of soap to clean the jewelry and piercing. Be sure to rinse thoroughly to remove all traces of soap. Dry the piercing by patting it with a clean disposable paper towel.

You should wait at least two weeks before your jewelry can be changed out; this should be done by a professional piercer the first time. We are available to change the jewelry for you.

Do NOT remove your jewelry if you suspect infection. Irritation can be mistaken for infection.

The jewelry must remain in to allow drainage. If you have any concerns, please call us immediately.

FOR ORAL PIERCINGS:

Every time you “eat” or “drink” (besides water), “smoke anything,” kiss, or put anything in your mouth: you should rinse with (non-alcohol) mouthwash. 4-5 times daily. Brush teeth regularly. You can use Listerine, but use 1/2 Listerine and 1/2 water in a clean cup.

Labret, Snake Bites, Monroe, and Dimples piercings: as mentioned above, clean around the ball on the outside with a clean, sterile saline spray (H2Ocean).

WHAT TO AVOID:

Avoid cleaning with Betadine, Hibiclens, alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, and harsh soaps like Dial, as these can damage cells. Also, avoid ointments as they prevent necessary circulation.

Avoid Bactine, pierced ear care solutions, and other products containing Benzalkonium (BZK). These can be irritating and are not intended for long-term care.

Avoid submerging your piercing in unhygienic bodies of water such as lakes, pools, hot tubs, etc. If you do, protect the piercing with a waterproof band-aid (such as 3m, Nexcare). These are available at most drugstores.
